Project Background
One of the projects of the Foundation is located along the ThaiMyanmar border. The area is situated in a remote location right next to the Thai-Myanmar checkpoint which remains politically sensitive. The majority of people who live there are those who have fled from Myanmar, escaping from the conflicts and fighting between the military based government of Myanmar and the minority group (Tai Yai or Shan people). They have nothing but temporary shelter on Thai soil. The camp is made possible by Thailand’s generosity and the recognition of human rights by Thailand. The people there are considered refugees. They are a mix of children, teens, old people and novice monks. Being in a remote location, it is not easy for people there to access the necessary public services. Furthermore, they have no Identification Card. The adults have only a document issued by the Thai government certifying that they are allowed to live in the area but cannot travel outside this permitted area.
The Foundation of Education and Buddhism in Maekong Region and run by MCU Buddhist University, Chiang Mai Campus therefore took the initiative to setup the project entitled “Fund For Food and Education for the Needy Children Project” to serve the novices and the hungry children who reside at Wat Fah Wiang Intr and at the camp. There are currently approximately 300 underprivileged novices and students who can benefit from education, starting from the primary school level up to the senior high school level.
